Content

Romantic Comedy targeted towards youngsters. Meant to entertain, not educate. The movie is modern day take on 90s hit Dilwale Dulhania Le Jaayenge. Although, it borrows heavily from the original but doesn’t reproduce the milieu or the story exactly.

Violence

Some of it is slapstick. There is a sequence where a character and his friends are beaten by a girl’s parents. No blood is shown but the guys are shown getting medical treatment. In another sequence, fight erupts followed by harassment of a girl by few shady characters in a restaurant.

Sexuality

Flirtation & kissing (on lips and cheeks) is shown throughout the film between main characters. In one sequence it is implied that a couple have had sex. They are shown afterwards in a bed covered with sheets and talking for a long time. A different couple is implied to be having sex in a hotel room, no nudity shown. Two other characters make their video and later blackmail them. It is shown that they are watching the video, although viewers don’t see anything. Some moaning can be heard. Some gay flirting is shown, and two characters talk about homosexuality’s openness and acceptance in India. Several female characters are shown in skimpy outfits, dancing suggestively in a club sequences in two different songs.

Language

No hard curse words are used. In the ending credits song sequence the male singer sings derogatory lines about female character.

Drinking, drugs, & smoking

Smoking and drinking is shown throughout the movie. Various characters smoke in many scenes. Both the male and female leads are shown to be fond of drinking beer and vodka, and other characters are also shown drinking and smoking.

Morality/Attitude/Behavior

Both the characters are shown to be fond of designer stuff and material. The female character wants to buy designer lehnga for her wedding which she can’t afford; she sells her jewelry and unsuccessfully tries to con/blackmail people, although later has change in heart. A male character in a slapstick sequence kidnaps his teacher to improve his grades. In few scenes the characters have socially unacceptable or deviant behavior towards elders.

Bechdel test 2/3

Movie has more than two female characters. They do talk to each other, but most of the discussion is around the men in their life. The women characters are mostly shown submissive and weak, even though the main female lead is shown to be modern and progressive, she wants the men in her life to take care of her. Movie does have a patriarchal tone throughout.

Bottom line

Overall, film target audience is youngsters above 15 who have certain level of understanding of characters behavior and type of content. For the quality of the film, check out the reviews on
